How to Start An Artist Blog

Help! I want to start a blog on  my artist website but I don’t know what to write about.

While we all understand the advantages of blogging for increased web traffic and connection with our audience, the process can be laborious leading to impostor syndrome and even worse, a feeling of adding to the noise.  After all, you want people to appreciate your artwork, not necessarily your hot take on ‘15 ways to mix purple’.   

As you set out to start a blog, it's important to research and write about your own curiosities. 

Blogs serve as a platform for both learning and teaching, and interestingly, you often learn the most when you teach others.

In the context of your art blog, don't just seek out a list of generic art blog prompts like 'write what you know,' 'share your own artwork,' or 'discuss your techniques.'

First of all, writing about your art and technique in this way can be nearly impossible when you’re creating dynamic artwork.  Taking this path can dramatically discourage your from writing in the first place because your writing will often feel trite and incomplete.  

Instead, ask yourself what you personally are  genuinely curious to learn more about, in the realm of art or elsewhere (connect the dots later).

Research these topics and then blog about your discoveries. This process of exploration and revelation will not only provide you with blog content but also inspire you to delve deeper into your interests. Take yourself to the library, a museum, or an Internet deep-dive into something you've always wondered about.  Record your adventure and share on the blog.  

Along the way, the overarching theme of your blog will gradually reveal itself to you. Think of your blog as a means to uncover your deepest curiosities, and that's where you'll also find your true audience.
